FEATURED CLUB MEMBERS
Meet the nominees for the 2018 Officers and Board of Director positions. Each nominee has provided a little information about themselves.
Chris Kimerer
My involvement with the German Shepherd Dog started in Germany when I was a child, there was a Schutzhund Club just a few blocks from where I lived and several members walked their dogs to the club. One dog and owner in particular amazed me, the dog was never on lead and always in a perfect heel position, he was beautiful.
When I came to the US and graduated from High School I purchased my first GSD in 1984. He ended up being severely dysplastic and I put him down at 2 ½ years of age. My vet recommended doing research for a good Breeder, which led me to Tom & Patti Brown of Summitwood Kennels who I purchased a puppy from and they invited me to attend obedience classes at Volker Park sponsored by the German Shepherd Dog Club of Greater Kansas City. I started attending meetings and joined the club in January of 1988 and been a member ever since.
Throughout the years of my club involvement I’ve made many lasting friendships and have seen this club develop into a welcoming open-minded organization with the total German Shepherd Dog in mind. I look forward to serving this club for another year as its President.
Susan Hunt
After graduating from KU, I worked as a High School Biology Teacher for five years and then took a job as a Forensic Chemist with the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department’s Regional Crime Laboratory. In that job, I analyzed drugs, evidence of crimes, and testified to my analysis in Court at criminal trials. I also attended a two-week course on forensic serology at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Va., a two-week Crime Scene Investigation Course with the KCMOPD; and obtained my Masters of Criminal Justice Degree. On a whim I took the Law School Admissions Test and was offered a scholarship to Washburn, UMKC and KU. Of course, I went to KU, and graduated from Law School in 1986.
I began working for Jim Wyrsch and Charlie Atwell at a premier criminal defense firm in KC. While working at the firm, Jim Wyrsch, Judge Anthony Neugent and I wrote and published a book, “Missouri Criminal Defense Practice.”
After a few years, I quit and became self-employed, which I remain today. My practice is limited to primarily federal criminal defense and I have been involved in some of the most highly profile federal criminal cases in KC, including some federal death penalty prosecutions. I am currently winding down my practice to retire next year (I said the same thing last year!)
My first contact with the German Shepherd Dog Club of Greater KC was in 1973. At that time, they offered training at Mill Creek on the Plaza. I took my first GSD to kindergarten, beginners and novice. At the end of the Novice course they sponsored a dog show and my dog won first place and high scoring dog! I still have the trophies and certificate and they are part of my treasured possessions! I currently have two GSDs–four-year old Roxy and nine-month old Solo!
Debbie McHenry
I have been a member of the GSDCGKC for five years, this time! I first joined the club in the 80’s but life, work and kids took priority so I had to drop my membership at that time. I am currently retired from the North Kansas City School District where I taught Students with Special Needs in the high school for 30 years.
My love of German Shepherd Dogs goes back to my teen years when my parents gave me my first puppy...from Caralon Kennel in St. Louis, since then it has been a long love affair with these gorgeous, intelligent dogs! My passion has been obedience training. I have been fortunate enough to own some great working dogs over the years. Rally and tracking have been a part of the mix in the last ten years as well; as I expand my knowledge.
My goal for the club in 2018 is to continue to welcome all GSD lovers/owners and learn more about our dogs. We have so much to share with each other and these dogs give us a lot of joy!
Nancy Kennedy
We have owned German Shepherds since 1980. My love for them dates back as far as I can remember in my childhood. Growing up I wasn’t allowed to own one, so the first thing we did when we bought our first house was to buy a GSD puppy. A few months after that we brought another puppy home and have had GSDs ever since.
I really wanted to connect with people and a club that shared my love of the breed. I joined the GSDCGKC in May 2010. I have learned so much from other members through the years and have made many wonderful friends.
Mike Kennedy
Nancy and I bought our first GS (Muffin) and a few months later (Snowball) in 1980 when we purchased our first home, we have had German Shepherds ever since. We joined the GSDCGKC in 2010 and have met many new friends and acquaintances and look forward to meeting many more friends as the years progress.
